Place-names

The place-name layer contains about 24,300 names. Names of buildings and other structures and names related to boundaries were taken out of the place-name layer as well as the names that have been connected to features in other layers (hydrology, height points and for the polygons in the layer for buildings and other man made structures).

The place-name layer is constantly being updated and it is very common for the institute to get comments regarding place-names. The handling of the comments is done together with The Árni Magnússon Institute of Icelandic Studies, which is the deciding party in this matter.
